Problems

Zanzibar economy strongly depends on international tourism. Nevertheless rural communities and in particular young people do not benefit from tourism and suffer its negative impact on local culture, and environment; tourism development, by limiting their access to natural resources, threatens their food security. Nowadays local people are lacking in the necessary skills to be employed in the touristic sector or to carry out induced economic activities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a deeper environmental awareness through environmental education activities in schools and to strengthen community organizations involved in environmental management by addressing the solid waste disposal issue.
